With a rich cultural heritage, Serbia offers a good variety of locations and architectural styles. Filming locations in Serbia include old breweries, wine cellars and citadels such as Golubac or Kalmedegan. Photographers and producers can also use urban locations which mix German, communist and modern architecture, but also traditional villages.
The Tara National Park is one of the regions that offer breathtaking scenery and give a sense of wilderness.
Citadels
One of the most popular filming locations in Serbia are its fortresses. While some are abandoned, many became tourist attractions and have been used for shoots.
Fetislam
Fetislam is one example. The Turkish Fortress was built in the 16th century by the Ottomans and the translation of the name is Victory of Islam.
Golubac
The Golubac Fortress in the homonymous town is located just south of the Danube and dates from the 14th century.
Kalmedegan
Another filming location in Serbia worth considering is Kalmedegan (Belgrade) Fortress. The place is located in the heart of Modern Belgrade, the Serbian capital.
Old Breweries
Apatin Brewery dates from 1756 when it was built as animperial brewery owned by the Imperial Chamber. Still functional today, Apatin is one of the oldest in the country.
Communist architecture
Novobeogradskiblokovi (New Belgrade neighbourhood) is a group of communist buildings raised in the Serbian capital in the late 60s/early 70s. It is one of the most accessible filming locations in Serbia to illustrate Soviet architecture.
Urban
Serbian cities such as Belgrade, Sremski Karlovci, Topola and others mix the Habsburg style with communist buildings and contemporary architecture. In general, municipalities are very open to film and commercial crews and permits can be obtained at zero or low cost.
Villages
While the country has a number of traditional villages with hospitable locals, Drvengrad is one place worth checking. The village was specifically built for Emir Kusturica’s film Life Is A Miracle (2004).
Nature
The Tara National Park is a 200-square-kilometre natural reservation with an amazing mix of breathtaking scenery and wildlife. Located in Western Serbia, its main point is the Tara Mountain with an altitude of 1,590 metres.
